mot failed

my car just failed its mot, all on brake pipes!! front to rear inner and outer, offside front inner, offside rear outer, nearside rear outer, and advisory on nearside front inner, so got a roll of new brake pipe and a full set of flexi pipes and gonna renew it all, wasnt expecting this on a 6 yr old car though!

That's not good. Are they really that badly corroded? Never heard of one going that fast, nor to that extent.

All I can think is that all the salt on the road last winter may have got to them, especially if it never gets washed underneath - although I thought that with the extent of protective coverings under the X5 even the brake pipes were shielded?

I never used to wash under mine per se, but I did use a Karscher nozzle to at least get a strong mist/spray underneath. Has to be done with some care as always, but all I was trying to do was get the crud off the bottom of the car in the Spring after the 'Salt Season'. A lot of muck used to come off I do know that.

hmmm neither had i, they are protected to a certain extent but every exposed bit is corroded very bad, but at least there getting done and they are quite important i supose!!

Sorry to hear that.
I drove back from Alps last December - the Saturday with loss of snow. Got back fine but remember opening the bonnet the next day and being amazed by the crust of salt behind the front grill. It was solid and about 5cm thick.Now, I try to hose down the car underneath every week in winter even if I'm not washing it and only have 10 minutes. With sub zero temperatures, there is no water to wash it away on the road and it is seriously corrosive.
