Items 11 thru 13 here:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=11&fg=15

And to answer the OP I would think it will be the breather as itemised above and not the hose.

Oil separator (if you are changing it) is 15.

And as you have half engine top in bits anyway, you might just as well do an air filter change too.

And they said my facelift would DEFINITELY have the updated assembly - I had the old one. PITA if you believe them as the new assembly will not fit the old one! :headbang:

Go through the dealer with a money back option.

This link and the one above are the earlier type that clog up by the looks of the pics. You can see the differenve between new and old on the links provided by Sanj :)

Whilst widely regarded as sensible or even essential to be changed I had thought this wasn't a sheduled service item. I mention this as origoinal post asks when done on inspections.

Agree don't think this was a serviceable part.

There is no set time to change the breather

The air filter for the engine is changed on the 3 rd oil service

We change the air filter on every inspection as it better and saves confusion as to which oil service it was changed at

I agree with Jason's approach too. Oil & Filters at every oil service. It's the way it used to be done back in the days of Oil, plugs, points, air & oil filters, retime the engine, check the gaps, and still seems the right way today. I even used to be able to do all my own servicing and not a code reader, GT1 or any other electronic control system in sight. Oh happy days......

You obviously didn't have the optical points mod with electronic ignition firing the coil then, much more reliable than real points and condenser, certainly helped many a 3.5 V8 Landy keep going ;p
