Ipod and Aux In Connector?

Since buying my X5 the "Aux In" socket in the back of the centre console has never worked with my ipod touch.
Whilst talking to a car audio outfit recently he tells me that the socket will not work with an ipod and i need a cable to be made up and its £30. Is this correct?
I asked at BMW and they say a simple 3.5mm jack cable should work.
Anyone else had this?
Car is a 2001 X5 3.0L Sport (E53) fitted with Proffesional Headunit and Satnav

My expeerience with an iPod nano was that it didn't have quite enough output voltage to get over the 'squelch' level and register the input. (That was just using a standard 3.5mm jack). Others have reported it worked ok so it seems to me that iPods are just about on the limit.

Ah so could be something in this - and all along I thought it was the cable.
Is there anywhere I can get the lead for less than £30?

Foe what it is worth, I think Petert is spot on.
I have a Merc CLK and had a similar issue albeit the IPOD would play through the Merc's AUX socket but was much quieter than radio/CD resulting in your ears being blown off if you inadvertently switched back.
I bought a product called a boosteroo in the US which is about the size of a fat marker pen and fits between socket and Ipod. It is battery powered and boosts the signal. It works but cost about $30 or so. You can probably find it via google.
Good luck.

The aux socket in the rear centre console is mainly for a video input. If you use it it only works on mono so no stereo sound. You can get the lead from BMW for about £40 that connects into the back of the headunit and mounts in the glovebox. I think there are other threads about showing you how to do this.

Cheers for replies.
The Aux In then as fitted seems useless?
AS for the retrofit option - does this have to take the place of the cd changer? And does it give full track names on screen and ipod control via steering wheel/headunit?

The rear centre-console one does work just not with the Apple family too well. The input wants a higher output than what the Apple devices push out. My Sony PS2 mod is connected to that same switch and works fine, but then it is a beefier unit (hard-wired, not a portable device, etc).
Get an Intravee if you want full integration. No connection via the headphone jack will give you any control through the car (apart from volume), not even this retrofit aux connector. Fits behind the SatNav screen to the OEM connector and the other end is supposed to go in the glove box. You don't lose the CD changer.

the aux input at the back of the centre console is an audio/video input. you might think that's fantastic but the downside is its not meant for music so its not stereo.
having read through many forums the solution seems to be cable: 'BMW part number 65120153503' suggested by squeaky2 above (that is of course short of fitting a intravee or brom or something of that sorts.. - note that any one of those requires the cd changer to be pulled out).
i've taken the brave step of ordering cable today. will go pick it up next sat. lets see how it goes.. might be 50 quid down the drain if that doesn't work!!

Mine works ok with my iPhone but the sound quality is quite poor, so my advice is not to bother. Look ay the intravee or go the whole hog and look at the Dynavin.

Yes but sound quality as mentioned by others is never perfect - Intravee or Chinese units.
