40d Ordered

Post by worsy » Tue Sep 20, 2011 11:24 am

Another newbie here, just ordered with December delivery. Gone for Carbon Black/Black Nevada as I'm not brave enough for White exterior or Beige interiors.

Dealer just confirmed MY12 has flappy paddles on the steering wheel also :)

You are going to love it - it's a brilliant car. You may want to also consider the active cruise control which makes travelling congested motorways (they usually are) much more relaxing, also HUD is very handy when navigating - directions and speed are right there just below line of vision. Flappy paddles will be great - don't know why they weren't even available as an option ...

Thanks Guys.

MJim, I could have gone mad with the options but the HUD is over a grand, lot of cash. Do the directions appear in the binnacle like the Audi Sat Nav or just on screen?

The instructions appear on the HUD and include a countdown bar, direction arrow and road data. If you have speed limit display then you get additional data. It also shows your cruise control speed as you set it, and then the status without having to take your eyes off the road. No gun or target sight option though, unfortunately!! 8-) :P

The other thing I would consider is the all around camera option as this also puts camera in the front wings and help when you have to 'stick your nose out' at difficult junctions - you can see the view to either side direction from about 12" back from the front of the car. I use it a lot when we're in Wales as a lot of their roads have 'tricky' junction once you get rural (aka most of Wales) :D

You will love the 40d and if as you say they have now added the flappy paddle option then that makes driving even more fun. :driving:

Personally I'm not a fan of active cruise control as it takes some of the driver concentration away by allowing reliance on a system that cannot cope with the muppets you find on the motorways. I did try it before finalising the spec on the X6 and found that if someone pulls out close to you without looking (all too common) then the system either overreacts, or fails to act whilst it sorts itself out. I de-selected that option. It may have got better in a year, but I wasn't convinced. Don't get me wrong, it is a very good idea, just not for the poor standards of driving you see in this country.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

I had a look on Youtube at the HUD. Although the geek in me loves it, I think it would be distracting personally. I'm from Wales so used to the junctions, the only thing you need worry about is a tractor and you can hear them ;)

No worries - we all have different priorities - just wanted to flag how much I enjoy the HUD / Active Cruise in case you'd overlooked them. We've also got the front cameras and ocassionally find them handy, but they don't get used much. You've chosen a great car and that's what matters. You've also got the most important toy in my view - the birds eye camera. My wife commented the other day she find's it easier to park the X5 than our Golf. I think it's pretty much essential if you do much parking in confined areas.

Now the long wait !

Welcome.

Nice sounding car there

Paddles is a nice addition. Are they proper paddles like an M car or the confusing buttons ?

Thanks again all.

@MJim Yup, I've tried to curtail my spend this time. I've an Audi S4 that has almost everything on it and it's a waste speccing up lots of stuff. If I keep this one beyond my record (2 years :|) I might regret it but I get bored easily :)
@535boy The spec says ".....with gearshift paddles" so am assuming the former.
