reverse camera install

Hi,

I am installing a reverse camera in my X5 2003.

I have taken the plastic bit offwith the number lights and feeding the wires to the inside, but there is a plastic cover on the other side of the boot which I can't get off. There were two black screws on it which I have taken out, but the whole plastic cover on the inside isn't coming off and I don't want to break it. Does anyone know how it comes off?

Can you take a pic of it - I'm struggling to understand what bit you mean. :scratchhead:

Hi Sanj,

I managed to take it off. Please can you let me know where is the best place to get a feed for the reverse light?

Without going out to the car physically and checking I can't answer that right now - it's over 30 miles away! But if you prise the lower hatch (just snaps in) and then behind the sponge you'll see the wire in there (from memory) I think it was white and black stripe or yellow and black stripe. I can check once home later tonight, if youy're OK to wait?

Sanj,

Thanks, when you say lower hatch is that the boot flap that folds down?

Yes - open it and the inner plastic piece unclips. That hides the inner tail lights that hold the reverse light wiring. Make sure you follow it back out to the boot area. That way no need to feed your cable through the lower tailgate/hatch.

Hi Sanj,

I found the wire it was White with a yellow stripe. Thanks for your advice.

I have connected the camera and I am getting a meassage on my dash that the number plate light is not working, but it is. The number plate light is the one built into the camera.

LOL - I did think that afterwards...

Afraid that's one of the perils of getting this type of camera - the LED bulb doesn't pull enough current and the car thinks it's faulty/gone as a result. Only way to get rid of it is to disable the light checks the car performs on every startup - a scanner/resler should be able to do that.

Well done though - all working? Get the camera to fire up in reverse gear - done any pics of your hard work? You happy with it?

Hi Sanj,

Yes, all working and works on reverse gear. I remember seeing on a forum that if you connect a resistor to the LED light it dosen't trigger the message.

Thanks for all your help.

Yeah that should work, try it. Would be good to know for others who try this and get the error message.

Will do.

In the meantime, how do I re-programme so the message does not come up?

hi
i bought one of these cameras from carvision and has no error messages .and to test if the light check was functioning i removed a bulb and error came up..
however one interesting thought is that the led would not work on the left hand side of the handle but works fine on the right !
so maybe this is something worth thinking of
