Plugs in under dash above accelerator pedal using a 16 Pin socket.
I am not a computer guru I can recommend the Peake R5FCX3.
It will read & clear fault codes plus be able to reset service lamps without having to mess about using other methods.
It wont reset brake fluid warning lamps. It wont reset airbag warnings. Peake make another unit that will do the later only.
It wont allow you to program functions or mess with other settings.
It is easy to use......you simply note any codes and look them up in a book supplied with it, (copies available online if you buy a used one without the book).
Maybe buy the U, (universal version), if you may also want to use it to be able to use it on older models (with the round pin under bonnet connector). My 12/01 build uses the 16 pin socket.
I have a 16 pin unit but I have since also bought a 3rd party adapter lead (so I can use it on some older BMW's).
Maybe beware of non BMW specific readers..........Having to google codes you pull might become a bit boring later.

Depends on what you want the scanner to do. I have the 1.4 version. I bought it to activate the diesel heater from the timers. Money well spent last winter. It will allow you to change somethings and tells you what faults are within each section ie engine, lights etc. I think this one does other BMW but not sure. I have never used any other type so cannot comment on them. If you wanted to see it working give me a pm. The plug as said before is at your right knee. you will have to flip the cover down and away you go.
