Is your Driving Licence valid? Check it asap!

A conversation in the office last week revealed three people in of one of our teams had expired driving licences. All three 'assumed the DVLA would remind them of the imminent expiry - bad assumption! They may not. Some do, and some don't get reminders. I didn't either. These people are now at risk of being prosecuted until it's sorted for them. It really is that simple to miss. The DVLA state thus.....

It is important to know when your driving licence expiry date is (or was), as it is illegal to drive without a valid licence. Although the DVLA may send renewal reminders prior to the expiry date, it is your responsibility to make sure that your licence is up-to-date, including getting renewal forms if necessary. Driving without a valid driving licence can result in a fine of up to £1,000, and between three and six penalty points on your licence. Your car can also be seized and crushed.

So when was the last time you checked yours?

If, as most of us probably do these days, you have a 'Photocard' type licence, it is only valid for ten years and then has to be renewed. The issue and expiry dates are in row 4 on the photocard. If it's out by two years or more you might even have to retake your test - jeez is was bad enough 30+ years ago :(

Depending upon your insurer, you could get a bill if you had an accident. Though as pvr states later, it is rare.

As a former Fleet Manager I had to annually check every one of those persons required to drive the vehicles under my care to ensure they had a valid licence, the right groups and weren't banned from driving a motor vehicle. I kind of kept the habit of checking mine even now - only for expiry mind. As I'm now approaching 'Senior' status (or past it in a certain person's eyes :x ) I have to refresh my failing memory :D

One correction: Insurance is not related to this. You are always third party covered, and the insurance company may try to get the funds back from you in case of an accident, but never seen an actual case for that.

I did get a reminder for mine actually, was pretty painless at the postoffice to do a "one session" photo and license and you are allowed to drive as normal whilst the photocard is being renewed.
