On recent visit to my local BMW dealer, looking to change to a newer model, the dealer informed me that my current x5 was pretty worthless as it was manual and had no sat nav. he said it would be more desirable if it had sat nav.

I've decided to keep it for work, but would be interested in what is involved in installing sat nav.

The cost can be prohibitive - you will need:
a monitor (£200 +/- ebay),
a drive (mkii = the oldest you would want £120+ on ebay, or mkiv the latest and best £400+/- on ebay),
a wiring loom for the retro fit (not sure on price)
and miscellaneous bits and pieces like GPS aerial, dash conversion kit, boot mount for all your new equipment, etc etc.
Plus, you will need a radio module (BM24 or 54 £100+ on ebay) as your in dash radio becomes obsolete.

Then there is the fitting of it all which involves ALOT of stripping to run things from front to back and all over boot.

Now if you were to get an extra £1000 after having done the Nav retrofit, I am still not sure if I would bother. For all the hassle for something that hasn't bothered until now, I would just accept £1k less for the car.

Again, depends what you get back for the initial outlay. May make the car more 'saleable' and give you an additional £500 asking price. Then, yes...

Btw, if you went in with a fully loaded 4.4 auto, he would have said it's worthless because no one wants big engined petrol cars and the extras make no difference to the value

The bottom line is they are in the business of maximizing profit by lowering trade in value and over valuing what ever they're selling.
