SAT NAV reset
SAT NAV reset
Is there anyway to reset the SAT NAV. I installed a MK4 unit the other day... it worked fine for a few days, then one morning, the GPS signal on the screen was erratic. i.e putting me miles out from where I was, in fields etc etc.
Can I do a hard reset? I do actually have the V32 code and map upgrade coming so will this fix that?
Cheers Greg

Re: SAT NAV reset
The best way is probably to pull the power off for an hour by disconnecting the battery.
Mine does the same every so often and then seems fine again for months. Sometimes it's a case of the satellite almanac lookup table in the receiver gets out of synch and leaving the car running with a clear view of the sky and not moving can help. The almanac tells the system what satellites it should be expecting to see at any time of day is so that it knows what to 'listen' for.
I've got V32 code in mine too now (Map disc is OEM 2008), but I don't use the car much - stolen by HRH - and she's not reporting GPS issues. But then again she probably wouldn't notice!!

Re: SAT NAV reset
This has just started happening to my sat nav. I was just about to start a new thread when I saw this one. I notice that when it is doing this it never seems to register any sattelites on the top right of the nav screen. I have tried several discs and each one has the same issue.
The other day I was travelling north but the sat nav had me going south, even the north arrow was 180 degrees out, and I ended up about 40 miles from my destination (work) and in the north sea somewhere
I will try disconnecting the power at the weekend.
Do I need to disconnect the battery or can I just unplug the power from the Mk4 nav dvd drive ???
I have the latest V32 firmware also.

Re: SAT NAV reset
i would actually disconnect the battery as the fault might be in the remote gps antenna or even elsewhere.. hth.

Re: SAT NAV reset
Guys, before you think your satnavs are faulty, just remember that the satellite replacement programme from the US has ended somewhat abruptly and with the US in deep financial doodoo it isn't going to be re-instated anytime soon...... the effect is that aging satellites which were replaced and added to by the US military regularly, are simply going out of service and becoming part of the increasing cosmic scrap heap.......if there are no satellite replacements at all from hereon in, GPS systems will cease functioning altogether within the next 5 years or so.......... So systems are taking longer to lock on and reposition as there are fewer satellites, and accuracy will be affected too - older systems rely on as many as 12 satellites to work correctly.

Condor, that is really interesting and definitely a good reason for people finding these problems!
So much stuff that we just take for granted these days... I wouldn't have even thought about the Satellites!

Re: SAT NAV reset
There are currently no issues with GPS according to the Space Command website. As of this morning there are 26 satellites operational with 2 spares on orbit. 24 satellites are needed to global coverage. A replacement Block III bird (No63) was launched a couple of weeks back to become Satellite 01 when it becomes operational.
My other GPS systems are all logging on perfectly (iPhone, iPad, Road Angels & E53, E46 & E71) and getting at least 6 birds. You need 4 to a 3-axis lock plus Delta (X,Y,Z and direction of travel)
GPS is too important to fail which is why there are spare birds up there and replacements still being built and launched.
I don't think the reason for lack of signal/position lock is anything more than either the GPS receiver failing to boot (changing a disc has no impact) correctly and almanac errors meaning it's listening for the wrong satellites. I found that if the car was sat still for a while the system caught up, but if I moved off before a lock was achieved then it was more likely to fail to lock.
One other possibility is that the Satnav firmware is out of date for the current constellation. You should be on V32 of the OS which may also include an updated orbital almanac. Just a thought. It won't be the answer for all, but I offer it as another option.

Re: SAT NAV reset
Could it be that the GPS antenna is failing ???
Mine doesn't appear to lock onto many satellites at all.

Re: SAT NAV reset
I notice the OP has installed a Mk4 in a 2001.
If you had a MK2 before that, have you disconnected the power from the trimble unit? When I put a Mk4 in place of my Mk2, it appeared to work (it has stored my location and so when I first fired it up, it was on location and appeared to follow me for a little while) but after a short while, it got more and more off track.
I pulled the power connector on the trimble unit (as it confuses the mk4) and it worked perfectly - there was no need to re-route the antenna lead directly to the mk4 from the aerial - it was fine still going through the trimble so long as the trimble wasn't powered.

Re: SAT NAV reset
You will only have one if your car had a mk2. Mine was a small unit attached to the bottom front of the sat nav mounting frame. If you follow the aerial from the back of the nav unit, where does it lead to?

Re: SAT NAV reset
I recall, i think from the old forum or possibly another place, that after such a module swap the antenna sometimes needs recalibrating. The simple method for this was to visit something like an open area trading estate and drive in tight circles for a few revolutions. I guess a quiet roundabout would suffice.
No idea if this works personally as i've had no upgrade issues with mine from four years ago.

Youre welcome.
And I can help with the radio problem too; are you any good at all with a soldering iron? If so I am 99% sure you could fix it yourself in 10 mins.…
