I need help please guys.... strange problem.... I topped my water up in the expansion tank so the red stick stuck out of the top as indicated on the expansion bottle.
I had a 5 mile drive and when i got their it was spewing water out through the top of the expansion tank cap onto the floor... I thought it may be a faulty cap so i bought a new one today and fitted it. After reading through the owners manual it says not to fill it past the stick level with the top of the fill hole.
I let the car cool down and dropped the bottom hose of the tank to release some water so the stick is now level to the top of the fill hole. Ran it up with the cap off and also bled the system with the bleed screw until water came out of that then retightened

Just been for a drive and its still spewing water out through the cap. its bubbling furiously in the tank.... Everywhere i read on the web it says not to overfill, so in reality i did do this but removed some and rebled..

The dash gauge is straight up (normal)

Any ideas?

Could still be air in the system. Any sign of water in the oil?

If it's not the bleeding system (no pun intended) then I'm thinking, blockage, stuck thermostat (the gauge gives lie to that though), exhaust or gas leak into cooling circuit, a leak somewhere else causing the pressure to fail and water to boil. Is the top of the expansion tank OK - not the cap itself, but the tank? Go with the simple options first - air still in there.

I had a problem similar to this on an old E34 530i. It was caused by air in the system even after I had bled it. I would try bleeding the system again. It was a PITA to sort out.

I have just changed all the hoses on mine after the usual failure at the start of the holidays , and could only get the system to fully bleed after putting the heater onto full hot. Seeing as its summer have you tried that?

My sincere thanks to all.... I have redone the bleeding procedure with the ignition on, heater full on hot but low fan, bled with the screw, topped up fluid and ran for 20 minutes, raising the revs now and again....

No leaks anywhere... just took for a drive around my area and bone dry... will leave now until cold and check levels tomorrow morning.

Now for my next issue that im about to post.....

This is how I bled the system on the E39. Simple when you know how but a worry when you don't and water keeps spewing out!
