Hi all, Just back from our first family holiday in the 2005 3D Sport. Car drove like a dream from Aberdeenshire to Cumbria, both my wife and I loved driving it, two adults, two kids and a fully loaded boot, the car just chewed up the miles and we arrived relaxed after the long journey. We also had a trip up to the north of Scotland aswell, the roads were mostly single carriageway. When we got stuck behind anything slow moving the X would jump between gears at 40mph (Between 2&3 I think) this was a bit annoying after a while. The car was in auto, and is fine moving through the gears, we get this slight jolt when the car is around 40mph, I've been reading some of the old posts and was wandering if anyone else has had this problem.
P.s Got headrest dvd's fitted for the kids, they're the business. Quiet kids keep mum and dad very happy. Xtrons 7" HD models with headphones and games, not that expensive and they offer the plug and play wire for the 12v sockets to save any fuss with hard wiring, worth a punt.

40mph may be close to a change point. Try resetting the adaption system by putting the key to Pos2, don't start the engine, and floor the throttle for 30 secs then switch everything off. This clears the gearbox 'learning' function and will allow it to relearn your driving style.

If you put the gearbox into manual mode and work your way through all the gears do the change up and down smoothly? When you get the jerk, what gear are you going into? Are you accelerating, or driving at a steady speed?

The six speed box has two three-gear sets 1/2/3 and 4/5/6. The emergency gears are 3rd and 5th. It could be the 3rd to 4th change which also changes gear sets. After mine was rebuilt I had very poor 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th changes which were very jerky and the revs climbed before the new gear engaged. Eventually it was decided to replace the box with another remanufactured one and that solved the issue. I never did find out what the issue was, but given the original failure had been catastrophic and may have damaged the casings, machining tolerances as well as the clutches, brakes, pump and torque converter. The chances are there is no connection with what you're experiencing, however it may be worth seeing if you have had a box rebuild, or remanufactured unit fitted.

The first and easiest thing to try is the reset. If the adaption reset doesn't work then you could get the codes read to see if any faults are showing - not all will throw a warning or light. Or it may be that at certain throttle settings around 40mph things aren't quite as smooth as they should be, or that it just happens to be a change point. There are so many 'normal' things that this could be it's hard to tell. These cars are just too clever!!

Thx X5Sport, I'll try the reset tomorrow. When we are driving through the gears normally there is no jerk, it's only when we are at around 40mph when in traffic, it's when we are just on the pedal or just taking our foot off, it may just be the change between 1,2,3 and 4,5,6. Hopefully nothing too bad. Thx again Reedler.
