MOT Time

Talk about last minute - my Xes MOT expires Saturday so I've got it booked in to a "timed" slot at Stratstone Derby tomorrow....together with the eternal parking sensor fault (warranty issue). Its under the "MOT Guarantee" so hopefully no nasty surprises. Renewed the BMW Warranty......£1098 for the year  but I guess thats only a fraction of the cost of a gearbox or a sunroof or maybe one valvetronic lever, so best to play it safe, I thought.....and keep :driving: without having to pay for huge repairs......

hmm, how much have you paid so far for warranty in total?

Nothing.....it is a BMW AUC. Its had a new oil cooler, a few parking sensor replacements, a new Bluetooth Module, a new key and a new petrol filler pipe all under the warranty so far, and used the BMW Emergency service 3x in the past year.........
Given its the 4.8 with everything being a massive price to fix on it, I thought I'd renew the warranty when it came up - was offered £880ish with a £100 excess for the Comprehensive warranty with BMW Emergency included, or £1089 with no excess. One claim and you're over the £1080 mark already, so it seemed sensible to go with the £1089. If you do it via monthly payments, the insurance continues until you choose to stop. The cars only done 37000 miles, will probably try to keep it insured for the next two years at least during which time dozens of parking sensors will probably go, and the sunroof cassette and gearbox and valvetronic levers have a chance of playing up too, I think its worth it. The car is for me, a keeper - I had my Rangie for over 6 years before moving to an X, and this 4.8 is super, no reason to change for the forseeable future - it does little mileage now as I have a company car, but that may change, you never know what is round the corner.

Well, MOT over and it sailed through without even an advisory. Parking sensors will be sorted next week as it was a corner one that wasn't in stock.
So that's good, MOT over for another year.

Oh well another year and another MOT failure, this time on the E46. This car never goes more than two years without breaking a rear coil spring! A known issue apparently for the convertible version. This will be the 5th replacement since the car was new in 2005, and it's still done less than 50k. :headbang: :headbang:

I'm going to start looking for non-OEM springs now coz the ones BMW fit are rubbish. I've never heard of a car breaking so many, and of it being a known issue which BMW don't care about. I guess it doesn't affect the ride because the suspension is so stiff anyway. A BMW 'Technician' suggested it's because they use recycled steel! I'm not convinced about that at all, I suspect it's either overhardened or underspecced for UK roads and a heavy car. It's always the rears too.

So, if fitting non-OEM, what springs does one go for? Eibach, Ohlins.........??
