Have today replaced the speakers in the car with Pioneer ones. Took a bit of working out for the first one but after that it was easy

The sound is so much better and thats with the OEM head unit. Am very happy but it does beg the question why BMW dont put something decent in in the first place.

Total cost is about £100 and a few hours time.

Took some photos whilst i was doing it. Would there be any interest in me doing a how to.

Looks a good job mate.Did you use any speaker fitting bezels or fit new ones into existing speaker frames and did you also do the rears ?

I am planning the same job on the weekend I have ordered Alpine components for the fronts and Alpine replacements for the rear doors the kit is supposedly coming with fitting bezels also.

Will let you know how I get on.

How To's always a good thing to build the site back up to its former glory.

As for the bezels stevox5, they are very specific to fit the OEM speakers. They have a connector, so you need to cut the wires that feed into it, that allows access to the wires which then go to your new speakers.

Can you see the outer edge looks light grey in the pics? These had to be cut back to get the lip out the way for the new speakers to fit. I removed the whole lot, cut the cable far back enough to be able to splice it back at a later date and then made an MDF mounting plate. Granted the sound is not as 'funnelled' but much better than OEM setup (even on my hi-fi speaker upgrade package).

Yep did the rears too. Also removed the little speakers in the dashboard.

Fitted components to the front and 3 way full range to the rear.

Will do a proper how too.

Bavarian soundwerks is a good place to go just to see how to get the door cards off. First one can be a bugger but once youve done one the rest are easy. Dont worry too much about the degree of violence you have to put into it

Its possible to get the original speakers out of the housing.......takes a little persuasion and a good screwdriver to prise them out. I then used a set of large grips and a hacksaw to remove some of the plastic surround so that the new speakers would fit.

Couple of self tapping screws to hold the speaker in and jobs done

The spade connectors that came with the speakers are just about right to fit over the old terminals inside the housing.......i then soldered bare wires to the new speaker. Means the original connector just plugs straight back in.

HI - I'm in the process of doing the same thing...replacing the speakers. However, i have taken the tweeter cover away and there is no plastic/rubber housing for it to sit in?......nothing there like your one?.........is tere somewhere i can get one from?

I really want to do this on mine next (I only have business too); so any advice would be welcome and a ‘how to’ very much appreciated… (I’ve just replaced a broken door handle carrier using the guide on here and I probably wouldn’t of tackled the job without the help); what a brilliant resource this site is!

OK...So i have now completed the change over of my 2 x front and 2 x rear sparkers. I have also disconnected the front tweeters in the dash as these were affecting the quality of the new speakers i had brought when i was trying to set them all up.......

I'm going to post some pictures on here because people were really helpful in asking the questions i had when i decided to change the speakers.....so Thanks!

1st: I read some posts on here, watched some youtube videos, looked at bevariumsound website and basically all the info is there!
I also brought some interior trim removal tools from Ebay, really cheap think i paid £6 for them and they were priceless! Used them loads of times to remove the panels, switches etc and didn't scratch a single thing!!

I brought the following speaker from Peter Doige in Great Yarmouth:
Focal K2 Power 165KR 160w for the fronts
Hertz Coax ECX 165 140w for the rear



The next few steps were reasonably easy.....
1 Remove the interior trim silver panels, remove the airbag badge, remove the window switches
2 Remove the 4 x screws
3 remove the bottom interior light
4 Remove the door panel - can be a real pain but abit of wriggling and lifting over the central door fitting and it soon comes off. Be carfeul to not pull the panel away before you release the door catch and the small light which lights up the interior door handle.

Then........(They are all the same!)
Remove the speaker housing.
Remove the speaker - takes abit of bashing and persuasion with a screw driver but you'll get there!
I then had to trim the housing to enable my speakers to fit....
I also had to drill a hole in the door panel to allow 2 x screws to go in a hold the speaker cross-over in place....all very straight forward!


Just got to nip out!! ....Finish this later!!
