hello all,
proud 2001 x5 d sport owner, when its running!! mechanic husband curses the day i bought it. never had a vehicle have so many things go wrong with it and he refuses point blank to have another, but i love it..

latest problem is it wont start, it will turn over and over until you can flatten the battery..but will NOT start. can get it started with a litle wiff of easy start and once its started will run fine, that is until you stop. you can turn it off and try and start it immediately and it just will not start. any ideas???

Sorry to hear of this

Replaced what exactly ?

My money would have been on glow plug control module.....Is that what you mean by "that" ?

What diagnostic kit is being used ?

Fuel pump relay? A known issue. It's a £10 part located above the fusebox in the top of the glovebox. 'Common Rail' wold tend to point towards the fuelling side rather than anything else. Could also point at a pressure sensor in the fuel line, or a problem with the injectors (dirty, worn). Your glowplugs won't be runnng at this time of year as they only operate when the air temp is below 5C, and the engine is cold.

It's probably worth a check of the relay for the sake of a tenner. If memory serves correctly, once you drop the fusebox the fuel pump relay is the one at the far left nearest the front firewall. If it fails or goes intermittent then the engine will just crank.

The diagnostics being referred to would be done by BMW or an independent repairer with the right hardware. It reads out all the fault codes.

Just thinking out loud, but is the immobiliser OK? Not sure how they operate but someone here probably does.

Avoid using easy start as there have been anecdotal reports that using it on modern diesel engines can make them dependent on it!

Oh, and welcome too......... :D

Firstly diagnostics was on Omitech machine, (not BMW ) which we have used many times in the past when things go wrong with the X5. i suppose it would make sense though to take it to BMW.

1) glowplug sensor/relay has been replaced
2) glowplugs have been replaced
3) sensor at the end of "common rail" has been replaced
4) fuel pump relay (in fusebox) replaced

Can hear the pump under seat "buzzing" so assume that is working !

About a week before this all happened, there was an issue with the alarm, windows, locking of the vehicle, which went haywire out of the blue, had to drive it with the alarm going, couldnt open the doors etc, but that seemed to go as quick as it came?
Dont know if that problem is connected? :(

Just speculating but my money would be on a faulty injector.I diagnosed the same fault for someone a while a go and it was a faulty injector.HTH

Well since I first posted in June the vehicle has just been "abandoned" and we just couldnt be bothered with it to be honest.
It still wont start without a quick wiff of easystart.once started it will drive and run fine . We have now caved in and took it to the local bmw dealers , NO faults showing on diagnostics ??? Thats great still dosent tell us anything!! They want to send the high pressure pump off to be tested as they think it could be that, surely if there was a problem with it ,the vehicle wouldnt run ?? I can just see pound notes dissappearing before my eyes with still no solution to the problem, please can anyone help
