Hi folks , the X5 has been going great ,but lately has devoloped and awful creeking noise from the rear .
I have been under and cant find anything obvious , all bushes look ok ,and it passed its mot ,last month without a hitch
any pointers guys , could it be rear bushing or the small ball joints ?
thanks

My guess would be rear anti roll bar bushes especially if you have had dry weather. They tend to squeak more after dry periods.I had this and solved it when changing them.
Used to drive me mad ...every bump it would sqeak and when driving through the town/village everyone would turn around
sounded like an old knackered out escort

I'd also have a look at the rear ball joint (at the base of the hub carrier- held in by a circlip)- you would need a press tool to get it out though. IIRC the part is about £45 from the stealers.

Sounds like what I had - see thread in Problems.
Thought it was bushes but turned out to be ball joint - cheaper to fix!
My noise got progressively worse over 6 months or so.

It's the rear ball joints from what you describe. I've just replaced the nearside one and still got to do the offside yet. It all looked fine just from looking but was making a huge creaking noise. Once I removed the extension bolt most of the rubber just fell away.
I've got the original BMW tool for pressing them out too if you want to hire it or I can do it.

Thanks for the replys guy,
This is brilliant feed back , looks like it is one of the ball joints in the rear .So will be replacing it or both of them myself.
I have the part numer for the ball joints ,but cant find the tool for pressing them in . Does anyone have a part No for this or a link maybe .
Thanks for the offer of the hire of the tool etc ,but i live up in Aberdeenshire .
