X HAS KEPT ME BUSY AGAIN!!!

I was driving off for the day yesterday with mrs x555 when 10 seconds in to the journey i felt terrible vibrations and a nasty shudder from the steering wheel accompanied by some awfull noises
.Fearing the worst i turned around and limped back to base ditched the car and then took off on our journey in style in the van
After an inspection on our return last night i couldn't see anything too obvious (was half expecting to see something like a wisbone or drop link hanging off the noise was that bad  )however i knew the pasenger side cv boot had lost some grease so i suspected a cv joint failure. This was backed up by my BIL (mechanic) who said that almost certainly it would be that.

So i have spent some of my friday evening replacing the cv joint :headbang: all done and the road test seemed fine so fingers crossed the x will give me a break for a while now :) as i seem to be repairing something every month at the mo

Anyway here's a few pics of an oily greasy PITA of a job

BTW for anyone doing this job make sure you give them nuts and bolts a good soaking with wd40 or similar as they get pretty shitty and rusty down there and can be pretty stubborn to undo.

I really feel for you mate. I was pretty much underneath the old car every couple of weeks for something or other. But it kept putting a great big smile on my face face when it was working as it should! Hope it behaves for you now! :)

Can't believe how you know this - considering you're not a mechanic!Like I say every time - well done for have the guts to do it! (He's probably broken down somewhere now)!!!
Sell, sell, sell :fuelfire:
Don't sell her - all the effort you put into getting her right, only to be passed on to the next owner!?! At least you don't have pram alloys - easier to live with!

Well done mate - but the pics not up to your usual high standard - next time, could do better! :P

i would not sell it... it makes it more precious when you put something in yourself. when you accomplish a fix, it is priceless

Thanks for the comments all
I won't be selling unless i have too :) even with all the repairs lately.
I suppose for a 7 year old motor with 93k on the clock most of what i have done lately is within 'wear and tear' reason anyway, it's just frustrating when they all seem to come together
However as said above when the x is repaired and you take it for a drive it just puts that smile back on your face especially with the satisfaction of doing it yourself :D
I sold my last x at around the same mileage so's to avoid some wear and tear issues and hardly had to do anything other than general maintenance with that one.I would have liked to do the same with this one and moved on to an e70 but the finances at the mo won't allow it so i guess i will just have to keep up the maintenance work untill such a time comes along :)

I have toyed with the idea of a 5 series for my next car and do really like them but at the moment i can't see me driving anything other than an x5........oh well time will tell and all that :driving:

@ Turks.....i'm trying mate :D but i'd have to sell a few of em to get me into an e70 fella :driving:

Great job and well done mate. It is such an awesome feeling doing it yourself. I did one of the rear balljoints on the 4.8 and it was an arse to say the least (but more so because I was completely doing it myself and I'd not tackled one before with an X5). Now done though, it's actually very straight forward, especially with the BM tool.

Hopefully you'll go a little longer before the next wear and tear bit needs doing.

Take my hat off to you old boy, job well done

Mine was in dealers for 3 days last week and that was painful enough just getting it there and back :D

Would like to have done a proper how to mate but that is one greasy oily job and even my little cheapo camera wouldn't take the mess.....mrs x555 generaly finds the camera come kids sportsday, birthdays etc covered in black stuff  :exitright:

Wouldn't mind a decent camera one day after seing some of the threads and pics on here.I'm clueless with photography but it's very interesting and some of the pics are stunning.
