Compact Wheel vs Spare Wheel.

Could someone explain why BWM offer either of the above and dont just specify the 1 type?
I run 4.8 and have the compact wheel as a spare! I would much prefer the Spare wheel option. Is this compact wheel part of the 4.8 set up or does it come part of all x53 versions?
Also, is it possible to have a full size spare 20" wheel in the spare wheel well?
Is it to do with the exhaust setup like on the E39? e;g no room for a spare? or in the x53's case not enough room to fit a full size spare?
Thanks,
Fred.

I have a full size spare in my car I'm sure. You should be able to get one in the wheel well as the rolling raidius has to be the same... the only thing that might prevent it is the depth of the wheel well.
Do you have a extendable load floor? Not sure if that would change anything? I doubt they would offer the option as a weight saving... must be a reason for it.

I dont have the extendable load floor.
When you say you have a full size spare its a 20" wheel right? As in onwers hand book it mentions 17" size spare? or the Compact wheel which i have. Like you i'm not sure if the load floor would make much difference to the wheel well depth or not, regardless of wheel size

Turks I'm not sure the 4.8 has a 20" spare as it is too high for the load floor. I think its a 19", will check when the rain lets up a bit.
Rolling radius is the same...don't think it'll be a 17 as it won't clear the brake calipers, or else we could use 17" winter wheels which 4.8is can't for that reason.

Its a 17" spare, thats what it states in the owners Handbook!
Or the compact saver wheel!
Have you tried fitting the 20" wheel in the well?

I always though apart from a size issue (depth of the well) that it was simply a cost saving exercise ?
A 20" front will fit the well diameter of course but at 9.5" over a regular 8.5" spare, is too tall for the boot floor cover when i tried it.

I didn't doubt if the 20"wheel would fit in the well my doubt was would the floor close down flush. As you have said it does not then that conclueds that. You wouldn't by chance have the extendable load floor?
This could be a factor like another member has pointed out.
Are we saying here that a 19" wheel will fit and the rear floor has total closure?
You think they would have made room for the 20" to fit

Personally i couldn't say whether a 19" will fit having never tried it. My car has a fixed boot floor.
** A correction is due also. The spare 17" wheeel is 7.5" width, which perhaps answers your question about 19" rims?

My previous X was a 3.0i petrol - the wheels were the 19" standard Sport with Diamaris, the spare was a 17".

Sapphire you must have edited your originaal post. Makes no odds if you have or haven't it does seem to read different to earlier today.
anyhow, the Handbook states the spare is either a compact option wheel or a spare wheel the 17" size!
I find this strange to say the least if a 17" wheel is the biggest size wheel to fit the wheel well with the floor fully closed, when the car runs 19" 20" wheels as standard.
Could x53 owners check their spare wheels and see which size's you have, would be much appreciated?
Would like to know the biggest wheel that fits snugg in the spare wheel well.
Thanks,
Fred

I'm not sure why this is so difficult. Forget the handbook and get a tape measure out. You can measure the depth of the well and then you will know what width wheel will fit. 18", 19", 20" doesn't matter as it should have the same rolling radius if you get the correct tyres.
When I say I have a full size spare, I'm not sure what size it is because I am out of the country and cannot check... but I know for sure that it isn't a compact space saver.
Personally, i'm not bothered what my spare looks like so long as it does the job well. I would only have it on long enough for me to get my punctured tyre repaired or replaced.

Calm yourself down there matey. You obviously dont know which size spare you have you were only guessing. You stated you had a full size spare wheel, which springs to mind the size wheel your x5 are running. In my case 20".
I dont have my vehicle at hand to check, if you would have read one of my earlier posts regarding SLS you would have identified this!!!
Was only curious to know would a 20" wheel fit spare well perfectly!
I would personaly take note of a handbook and what it states!!
The only person who's being difficult here is yourself!!!
Chill my man
Also count yourself lucky you have the spare and not the compact saver wheel. As circumstances change dramaticly if the compact saver wheel comes into play!!!!

Fred, apologies if my post came accross the wrong way... didn't realise your car wasn't with you.
Regarding the handbook, in most cases you can take the information printed as correct - however they are a generic publication and weren't re-written for the 4.8is models. I think I have read that there is only 1 BMW wheel at 17" that will clear the brakes. My spare is at least an 18" Wheel.
If the problem is still not solved by the time I get back to the UK, I will let you know what I have and post a photo.
Can understand you not wanting to run a compact saver wheel in the unfortunate event of a puncture / blow out!

Its not a 17" spare so there!!!! Well not in my car anyway! I also wouldn't take the Owners Manual as being bibilical and freakishly correct in every possible way!! It is written for a load of models, the 4.8 being only one of them, and minor changes also occurred in between printing owners manuals and new releases!
I don't have a compact or spacesaver wheel in my 4.8 and its not a 17" !! But its also not worth falling out with everyone over it!!
I'm happy to take a pic of it if you like, 20" wheels are too wide for any load floor, extendable or not, to fit over them. They fit in the well but are too high for the load floor to lie flat.

20" will fit as shown in the pic below (not mine)
but looking at the rim mark on the underside of the load floor i should say it's either a really snug fit or the owner is putting up with the floor not sitting correctly. (i half inched the pic from x5 world way back to show someone where the bluetooth module was)
There is a thread on x5outpost about this somewhere if i can find it later i'll post it here.
