Hi, I've got just over 2000miles on the clock, just after break-in period. Is it necessary to change engine oil now or should I do it at 10000mies/1 year?

I had mine done (Oil & Filter) at 1,000 miles as I'm still an 'Old School' engineer, but it doesn't actually 'need' doing. Cost me about £130. Have done with every car I've owned. It's defo good engineering practice.

I would change the oil and oil filter, there is bound to some metal dust and other bits floating around a new engine.
The 'running in' process also can create bits and also cause the engine to run a bit hot and degrade the oil.
So , yes it is good engineering practice to do it and will hopefully give a longer lasting engine.

With my M, I did not even have the choice as it was a manufacturer requirement. Therefore I can not see a reason not to do it for other engines though.

Thanks guys, I'd prefer to have it done than be sorry later, because I plan to keep this car for some time. I am not sure thsi car has a dip stick as oil level is shown on iDrive . Can this be done at BMW only or any other garage, say KwickFit, would do?

You can probably get it done anywhere as long as you're not breaching any warranty conditions. There might be a dip stick at the back of the engine bay, RHS of the engine. It's not in the manual. On mine it's here:

On the M3, a special , almost abrasive lubricant was used .. which is why it must be changed around 1k miles.

I can remember that on every engine I rebuilt I would use a special 'running in oil' which had to be changed between 500 and 1000 miles as it had certain additives for cleaning and to help with the bedding in of bearings etc.

I would change the oil without question if I were you, better to be safe than uncertain. Also does anyone know if the sump plug on the X is magnetic? Always good for holding any stray bits.
