Steering rack blow out

Hi guys,
Our X5 E70 has blown the bellows of both sides of the rack. The steering would sometimes feel a bit stiff, but would then clear its self back to normal . Kept an eye on fluid levels all ok. No problems for about 2 month. Then the wife phoned to say the car is making a high pitched squeal she said only just started nearly home.
When I looked in the engine bay everything looked ok looked in fluid tank and it was almost empty. Topped up fluid and took to my garage they put up on a ramp had a look then told the bad news. Can any member advise me as to a firm that remanufactures racks
The cost of oem is £2,700 from BMW . Do you have drop the front sub frame to take the rack off .Going round get quotes from a number garages what say they have to do differs from each one.
