For years i have carried one in my car. On the E53 it was a dedicated bracket on the drivers seat, on the briefly owned E63 it was in the boot.

It seems there is no BMW provision for such in an E71 (or E70?) I have previously bolted a genuine BMW cradle for one on the left side removeable panel in the boot, but this has proved to be less than ideal.

Has anyone created an in car fixing for immediate accessibility? There seem to be a few options for other models with a simple bracket bolted under the front seat rails, but none specifically for an E71 (70)?

Having witnessed many years ago a fatal car fire in which two ladies perished, that still haunts me. I would like to be better prepared should such event ever unfold in front of me again. It seems comfort seats are a compromise regarding this, but finding a solution would be good.

The only one that I’ve ever come across has been this one for E/F series cars. Whether it actually fits the E71 I don’t know.

I bought an extinguisher years back but could never find anywhere sensible to put it within arms reach without it being in the way of something or other, or needing holes drilled through the chassis that would upset the warranty in some way. I get your point though and feel I’d do the same if I’d witnessed that close up.

They aren’t part of the vehicle safety kit, with even first aid kits no longer mandatory in the UK, and I suspect most will be too small to really make a difference - though I’d try to help (and did so once in Reigate) put a car fire out, and even a few seconds helps.

On a related note is.powder type the best for cars ? Its something ive always been meaning to buy plus it needs to be about 2kg to be much use .

I’ve only ever carried dry powder, and I remember the traffic cars in the Police fleet I worked on (40 years ago!) all having 10kg dry powder types in the boot.

2kg is probably the smallest to consider as much smaller may give you confidence but will likely on put out a small fire.

I asked a colleague who knows a lot about EV batteries about what type to carry only to be told “about 10,000 gallons of water, otherwise step away!”

I have messaged Darkside to check compatibility. It's that basic design that's all over the internet but none suited to an E71, so far.

I note the points made about capacity. I have two BMW badged 1kg extinguishers, not likely to put a fire out alone, but would hopefully buy enough time to get any occupants out of a vehicle. If it's ablaze, the car is most likely lost anyway. Life preservation is the objective every time

Update for others.

It seems there is no easy, straightforward solution. The flat bracket type for mounting under the seat rails are not suitable. The front trim edge over the rails has an angle that would interfere with anything underneath it. So its a money saver, but not a solution for a grab and go extinguisher inside the car.

I have ordered one of these to experiment with, cheap enough and maybe it will fix to the lateral, front seat trim although weight on that could be a problem?

The bracket above proved to be pretty useless. It meant further costs but i went old school and acquired an early version seat mount. The car now sports two extinguishers which i hope i never have a need to use. I thought hard on where to place the seat holder, and although I never kicked this type of fitting in my E53, i set it off centre to negate that possibility. Probably overkill but my work is done
