X5 G05 - Why are 40i cars added extras inferior to 45e cars?

Post by Jay053 » Tue Mar 18, 2025 10:12 am

I'm looking for a high specification 40i, 2020 year would be ideal with lower/average miles.
I can't find anything of the sort, they must be like hens teeth or just not exist.

I know due to covid some cars had H/K audio, wireless charging and a few other things deleted.
There are a few 45e which have plenty of optional extras, B&W audio, Full comfort ventilated massage seats with Ivory White/NightBlue Extended Merino Leather.

Was BMW pushing the 45e to meet company emission targets and to do so loaded up the cars.

Do any 40i cars with a long options list exist?
Am I wasting my time holding out for one.

Thanks for any helpful replies.

Why do you specifically want a 40i? I think the 45e has the same engine but is a plug in hybrid with more bhp. There are a lot more about with excellent specs. Don't know why most of the 40i don't normally have a big specs.

Hi Gmc15,
Yes the 45e has the same B58 engine but it comes with a battery which weighs approx. 400kg.
It requires plugging in for 8 hours to charge fully.
The added tech could pose issues which maybe costly in the future.
All my fuel goes though my business so saving by using electricity is no big deal.

I'm happy to keep it simple with a strong engine, less weight and the same power to weight ratio.

I suspect many of the buyers were fleets/company leases and would have been looking for the tax savings that PHEVs came with over a pure petrol version. Many PHEVs, regardless of brand, were never plugged in. This is one of the reasons behind recent changes in tax rules.

Are you sure the battery weighs 400kgs? The ones in the full electric cars weigh less than that and are a lot larger than those fitted to PHEVs. The one on my i4 covers the entire base of my car and only weighs 350kgs with 300miles of range. The same pack is used in the i5. PHEV packs are very much smaller. The data I have suggests the battery pack is around 120kgs. It’s still a chunk to carry round though.

BMW often use badge snobbery along the lines of if you want options then you have to buy the right model. They’ve been playing that game for decades. As an example, having a TV receiver in the car was available right down to the 3-series. Now it is a 5 series and above option.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
