........ Driver's airbag this time. Got the letter this morning. As I've posted before, it's a bit of a PITA, but if BMW are happy to replace out-of-date parts free of charge, that's OK by me.
I'm not going to bother calling Vertu until after New Year.

No mention of passenger's on my letter, just drivers.

Had the X6 done a year ago. The company that made the airbags went bust after this and the company that bought the remnants is also now in trouble because the costs are spiralling. The recall has been running for almost 10 years now as they find more defective airbags. In the US alone more than 50 Million vehicles needed new airbags. The ‘problem’ is that the explosives used weren’t stored correctly and when the airbag fires, the bang is ‘too big’ causing the gas generator to explode. Someone was killed as recently as September this year by shrapnel. Thousands more cars are now having to be done.

Mine was done last year too, not something I'll forget given the damage the dealership inflicted on the interior. But fresh recalls are a surprise. I often wonder about driver safety when there are so many airbags for sale on the likes of eBay.

You can check for yourself online. Check MOT history and on that page is a 'check for recalls tab'.

It's booked-in for 3rd Feb. They claim they only need it in once. When I queried that, having previous experience of them having to order-in the part once they've ascertained replacement is required, I was assured they keep stock of the airbags on site. Call me cynical, but having worked in the motor trade most of my working life, I find that hard to believe.

Lets hope they speak the truth. As we know the steering wheel airbag is an easy swap. The longest duration is battery disconnect and the statutory 15-minute wai

I don't hold much hope, to be honest. My gut tells me that they'll have it all day and when I collect it they'll say; "When can you spare the car for the new airbag to be fitted?"
Then, late next year, we'll go through the same process again for the passenger airbag.
But, as we are all aware, that will mean the car will be off the road much longer.
