Non opening tailgate

A near neighbour came to ask me for help earlier. His 2010 E70 wont release the boot lock with a key or on the car. Its a climb through to the back for the emergency release.
A failed actuator perhaps, and where is it?

Any check control messages? Fuses (rear) are F99 (40A) and F121 (5A). Also check for damage to the wiring harnesses at top left and right of upper section, There’s a micro switch inside the lower door that prevents operation if it fails (position sensor).
If the tailgate is automatic then the actuator controller is on the right hand side rear equipment holder frame in the boot. Control is from the front distribution panel electronics within the front fuse board. There are also lockouts on the spindle drives if current draw rises above a preset reading. If it does then the drives are disabled to allow cool-down. That would show up by odd noises. If nothing at all happens then fuses would be a good place to start.

An unsurprisingly comprehensive reply, thank you. I'll pass this information on. Not wanting to get too involved if i can help it.
