H8 bulbs

I've ditched the idea of vehicle downsizing , so it's time to pursue the E71 things that have frustrated me over time.

I've been impressed with Philips LED bulbs, in another vehicle, though adaptors are necessary in the E71s fogs (but not in a 2005 Touareg?) I wonder though with the heat created whether stuffing all that inside the headlight is wise? Obviously halogens get very hot and there's no issues, i can't imagine LED/ canbus adaptors get hotter?

I dont expext LED brightness like on later vehicles but i would like to have white halos, not candle yellow. Has anyone got info to inspire me?

The angel eye rings in the E71 are lit by H8 bulbs, is that what you're saying?

Not an E71, and not angel eye illumination, but I replaced the H8 bulbs in the foglights of my F25 with H11. IIRC, the base of the H11 needs a little filing, but after that they fit straight in where the H8 goes. The necessary info is out there!
Then you could use H11s that have a whiter output.

Some sellers are telling me H8 & H11 are fully interchangeable, but are not based on your modification requirements.

HID direct are promoting Maruta, one option is a cool £170 but suggested as the very best for angel halos? The eBay references are, 274931384852 & 374207516309

In terms of the original halogen bulbs, a H8 will fit straight into a bulbholder meant for a H11. H11 into a H8 'holder needs the mod. I mentioned.
If you're specifically enquiring about LED upgrades, maybe they are manufactured on the H8 base - which would make them fully interchangeable.

Your Toureg may not be doing bulb checks, or uses a different system to that BMW use. LEDs will run cooler however the value of the LED power draw (in Watts) still needs to be catered for by the canbus resistor. A 90W LED needs a resistor that can handle 90W and that value is higher than the 55W of the H8 OEM bulb. Just how hot it gets will need actual measurement unless the light manufacturer states it.

If it helps, most electronics are designed to operate at below 70°C to avoid thermal runaway. That would be much cooler than an H8 runs at by at least 100°C, possibly more.

As you can see these are suggested for numerous BMW models and have an inbuilt resistor. If theyre no good, they'll go back.
FWIW, in the Touareg simply reversing the polarity clears the bulb out dash error. Its lost on me but i know the Touareg radio operates on canbus 1.6.

. Pictures in daylight aren't the greatest idea, but for the money and the literal pain in my hands created in fitting just one side, its not worth the money or effort. They will be returned.

As a footnote, why BMW make it so hard to change a bulb, i can only wonder

I got a few cuts when changing mine. The headlight bulbs are even worse to get at.

You either need hands the size of a double jointed 10year old who has the grip of a Gorilla or you have to take out the front wheel arch liner
That is what I resorted to, that way at least you keep your skin. The job is still an absolute Faff what wizard ever thought this was a good idea BMW ?
E53 4 screws remove a small trim slide out headlamp 10 minutes easy peasy or with the Headlamp in situ changeable with fat hands at the road side.
E70 Struggle for 20 mins cussing and swearing then Jack up car, remove front wheel remove wheel arch trim remove front wheel arch liner now you can access the back of the Headlamp without loosing skin and possibly other bits. Total time 1hr 10 minutes just crazy still if I have to do it again I now know the way
What happens if you have a bulb fail at night !!! If driving in Europe you need spare bulbs on board but they are useless if you can't change them

I wax lyrical about my old (2005) Touareg. The entire headlight assembly is cranked out from under the bonnet and withdrawn. Once out it provides access to all the bulbs. Its a few seconds to remove and refit, so much easier.
