I swapped the solid fog light vents to the open mesh type, principally designed for hotter climate usage? I think the M50d has these for radiator cooling.
Obviously more water will get through them, but i can't imagine that would generate any issues?

Apart from foiling the wheel arch with mud over (a long) time, I can’t see an issue. As you say, BMW use them in the M50D and any E70/71 with the ‘increased towing capacity’ option. If there’s nothing sensitive behind the trim then fine.

The only thing behind the closed trims is obviously the foglights access, and in my case the CANbus adapters for the LED bulbs.
As pattern parts, they're not expensive, i think I'll have a punt for some.

Is the wheel arch liner the next item behind? Just wondering if wind blast might be an issue? The M50D and towing increased equipped cars have radiators behind at least one, and from memory, only one ‘open’ grille is fitted to whichever side has the rad. It might not be a problem.
Realoem shows you might need an air duct cover installed to allow air through…

Aside from the frame that holds the foglamp which predominates the space, i do recall noticing the arch liner on the passenger side.. i think the M50d additional rad is that side?
I dont feel inclined to pull these out again unless it was to swap them. Maybe i should just leave them "as is"
