Hello all, obviously new here and new with an X5 E53.
I would appreciate any help or advice.

Few months with my 04 E53. Generally happy. Noticed the car is making a very -very very- loud metallic screeching sound when I turn the steering wheel -mostly to the right. The sound is coming from the suspension or rack or something. It is very very loud. It also does it when going over speedbumps.

Anyone has any idea what this could be?

Things to check are: power steering fluid level, power steering pump, any sign of leaks around the PAS system generally - the hoses were a known issue in 2004. Worth checking front wheel bearings and drive shafts for excess play or noise (rumbling, grinding).

Also check all the auxiliary belt tensioners, perhaps remove the belts and see if the noise goes away

On my old V8, the horrendous noise mine once generated was a seized alternator pulley. Hard turns strained everything to a point the belts were under huge pressure hence the really loud noise.

Whilst perusing i stumbled on this thread again. Its galls me that people join looking to solve a problem, never comment further or return with a "thank you". Selfish, rude? You bet

Hey sorry if this is not the right post for this but, My 05 E53 4.8IS. I replaced my air suspension with a
Air to Coil Coilovers Shocks & Springs Conversion Kit from ebay and not it has noise problems. The springs make noise when I turn the wheel and even when I move the wheel a few inches. Now does anyone have any advice if maybe product is too cheap & and I need better springs or wrong installation somehow or this particular x5 is never supposed to be with springs maybe? Please help!!!

One of our members - Raj - did a conversion some years back. Have a search on here for the thread. He did use a decent (not cheap) kit, though that may not be your issue. Might be some pointers in there for you.

I can virtually guarantee that the struts are assembled wrong. There should be some sort of spacer between the top of the strut and the top mount. ie the piston rod should be siting in the top mount bearing allowing the strut to turn quietly. Look inside the arch and the top of the strut will be touching the top mount rubber preventing it from turning properly. Therefore causing the springs to squeak. Not a great explanation but the best I can do.
