Anyone got any experience of gearbox refurb specialist in or around Bournemouth area. They X has decided to have a crap. The box would be removed and delivered to save a few pennies. Cheers

Morning Henry
Not used anyone that far West I have used Express Gearbox in Portsmouth for work on 2 Volvo's (both T5's with modified engines) and one of my E55's that Mercedes couldn't fix
They were excellent and helpful, that was a few years back but hopefully they are still going
Dave
My 4.6 is now a Summer weekend warrior semi retired 165k and touch wood still OK

Is the 4.4l gearbox the same internals as the 4.6l. ie just change the bell housing and transfer case. There are loads around plus with warrenty.

Check the part number on RealOEM - that should confirm any changes.
The rebuilder I used is a little far from you to be practical, although they will come and collect.

RealOEM lists them both as A5S440Z but no mention that the 4.6l has a different bell housing but I assume it would be a straight forward swap.

Annoyingly BMW don’t show a bell housing as separate. Possibly because it was a complete transmission swap only.
However, the part number for a 2003 4.6is transmission is: 24007512588 and has an end code UK
The same month (I chose Jul 2003) at random is: 24001423950 with an end code UP
What the difference I can’t see at present. No data about the internals and ratios in the tech data I have.

Yes a bit of a dilemma it could be a different number because of the bell housing or some nuts and bolts in a different position. Will have to search some more and see if I can find someone who has done the conversion.

In answer to the question RRPhil has informed me that "there is an extra clutch in the D brake (5 instead of 4) upper valve block has different KV-B and KV-E valves. Bell housing can be swapped"
Dammed if you do and if it brakes you wish you’d spent the money in the first place there is an extra 60hp. One assumes BMW had good reason to make the mods.
