X5 3.0i 51 plate (2001)

Hi,
Being a newbie to the world of X5 ownership I was wondering what to look out for when purchasing a used motor?
I am a BMW owner, E39 530d Sport and am thinking of changing up to an X5.
Car seems good, in need of a little TLC perhaps but fundamentally sound, however I have no experience with this model and in need of your expertise before taking the plunge.
Any kind of help and comments gladly received.
