I have a 67 plate F15 4.0d. It has R20s on it and summer tyres. Was thinking about buying some winter tyres and wheels to go to the alps and was looking on ebay. I do have couple of questions that maybe you can help
Do I have to put R20s on it or could 19s work ok?
Would wheels from an E70 fit a F15 model?
could I just put winter tyres onto my current rims for the trip?
thanks
kevin

I think approved 19 winter tyres are hard to get now by the talk on here ,check the door post for sizes to see if they were even an option .
Nothing stopping you putting winters onto your current alloys apart from swapping tyre twice a year would be a pain and not do your tyres much good either being swapped over so often , the best way is a second set of rims but there need stored and are bulky .
I believe the stud pattern was the same for the F15 as the E70 at 5 x 120 so yes they should fit fine

Welcome onboard
Id stick with 20's as 19's are not popular and would have no resale value if you ever wanted to sell them on , tyres wont be any cheaper either so not really any advantage in going smaller
If you are looking for winters beware when the snow is here they tend to sell out fast best time to get them is before winter and the inevitable price hikes as demand goes up ( no good to you now I know )

19” were the BMW approved size, but for a square setup.
Currently no ‘*’ marked tyres avail in 19” as BMW no longer use them. 20” winter tyres are readily avail though. I have a 19” staggered set and my only option is Continental WinterContact tyres. Not ‘*’ marked and not RFT. I’ve got their ContactSport 5 as summer tyres. Approved and RFT.

BMWs ☆ winter tyre preferences seem to be exclusively Pirelli, aka 'how much'? I noted recently 285 40 20 square set were a cool £400 each at Camskill but none are listed now.
Used wheels with viable tyres has to be the preferred option, storage aside. They're rare in the UK but wheel type 611 10"/10.5" wheels with one size tyre simplifies things a bit, but the same size tyre does fit on regular staggered rims too if you can find some. Happy to be corrected but wheels from E70 F15 F65 are all interchangeable. G series have a different stud pattern so will not fit.

I have pirelli winter tyres run flats 275/40/20 and 315/35/20 when I bought them I assumed they were * marked but they are run flats, pirelli scorpions. Would they be ok to use?

Pirelli offered (still do?) ☆ approved winter runflats. Last time i looked it required a large wallet to buy a set.
If the treads are the same pattern and within wear tolerance I'd use them for sure
IIRC Pirelli offered "Winter" and "Snow and ice" options. If what you have are BMW approved there will be a ☆ on the sidewall somewhere.

Seems like it's just BMW with the * marked tyres audi and others don't have this, then again they have a square set up. I do prefer the staggered setup in terms of looks.

The ☆ is "exclusive " to BMW, Mercedes-Benz have an "MO" (or similar?) code VW/Audi, i don't know what they have if anything.

There are various others as said.
AO = Audi OEM
MO = Mercedes OEM
MOE = Mercedes OEM Extended (can be used by BMW)
N+digit = Porsche (N0 - N6)
AR = Alfa Romeo
+ = VW OEM
According to my Dealer, I can use MOE in place of
for winter or summer tyres as they meet the BMW approved spec as well.
