Got it done yesterday, as I have always had it mot’ed on gas I was for some reason apprehensive of getting the emissions done on petrol. No logical reason for the worry. Passed no problem apart from a minute movement in the wishbone ball joint which he pointed out but didn’t give advisory. Interestingly he didn’t pick it up on the wobble test but with a pry bar under the tyre.

Funnily enough my X6 now has ‘slight movement’ in the OSF lower ball joint. Not picked up at MOT but found during a routine ‘safety inspection’ at the same dealership. Glad you got through the MOT

Bottom ball joint on my 02 e53 didn't show anything even on the shaker plate but with the wheel off it was hanging off.
That was when i first got it so the lot was changed to be sure.

Does that suggest that the wobble plate isn’t all its cracked up to be.

All i can say is both me and my friend who owns the garage and doing the testing where very surprised.
He does a 2 man test so a second person does some pulling and shaking on the fronts plus a big pry bar if you understand.

There's no substitute for a decent tester's opinion. I had our spare Citroen tested last week and was absolutely gobsmacked when it passed. It had a knock in the front offside. "Shaker didn't pick-up anything, so I can't even advise it". I changed the bottom joint on Friday and by the look of it it
should have failed. So much for safety.

Never seen Alun or The other tester James using the shaker.
They are old school like myself hands and pry-bar and always 2 on the job one in the car to do the bits like shake the steering side to side.
They are setup fot one man testing but never do.

If an examiner watched you doing an MOT would he not criticise you for not using the wobble facility. Weren’t they brought in to overcome bad testers. I do fully agree that there is very little substitute for experience.
