Hi had a gearbox service oil but still doing this when comeing to a stop getting a slight lurch jump does not do in sports mode do I need to do a reset what is reset process or is it just common prob you have to put up with any help would be gratefull hi muz said Mechatronic seals would they have done this on a gearbox service

You can try resetting the adaption system - ignition in (not started!) - full throttle for 30 secs and release. Start and drive off. It might fix it, but you probably need the gearbox software upgraded so need a ZF specialist near you who can do it.

It would depend on where you had the service done, most Automatic Gearbox services are a just a simple Fluid and filter change.

I had my E53 4.6is serviced the first time by ZF they drained the fluid and took some for testing, dropped the sump and removed the mechatronic unit all the seals were changed, and everything inspected, they reassembled it filled it disconnected the Trans oil cooler and connected a drain into a measuring jug they ran the engine until 3ltrs was in the jug. Stopped the engine reconnected the cooler and refilled the box ran it up to temperature and checked all the functions and software. Price in 2007 was £600 the result a really smooth box, since then I have carried out 2 further fluid changes myself always using the oil cooler disconnect trick to make sure the Torque converter was flushed and clear of any crud that may be there, Happy to report I still have a smooth box at 165k. Don't try and cut corners aways use the correct Fluid filters, seals and gaskets cheap is more than often cheap for a reason.

Did they fit a genuine filter, aftermarket ones collapse.....even after a day....

Greydog, That is the first time I have read about disconnecting the trans oil cooler to drain the torque converter. Did they do both pipes or just the one. If that does drain the TC then that is good information. Would be quite happy to buy an extra 3 litre of BMW’s oil to drain TC.

Hi, I had same problem with my car, same year, the lurch when coming to a halt was like someone thumping into the rear of the car, sometimes it was really bad and other times not so bad, anyway had gearbox service with new seals and also replaced all the solenoids think it is seven, cost was £800 and I haven't had a problem since, over 2 years now, really smooth gear change and no lurch, hope this helps.

Thanks for message I had an oil service but none of the above solonoids looks like it’s back to garage it’s very mild at the moment not a big thud so maybe I’ve got time to save up someone has said to me to do a gearbox update cheap 80 quid so might try that first thanks anyway

I tried software update by bmw garage first, waste of money, didn't fix the lurch.

It doesn’t always work but is the cheaper thing to try before more expensive transmission options. One thing that has just occurred is what state are the tyres in? You really need less than 2mm between any tyre tread depth and identical make/type all round. I think there have been instances over the years where tyres also trigger a lurch when stopping. It’s often due to the transmission ‘winding-up’ and releases as you stop. Worth a check at least.

Sorry for the late reply it was the return line they disconnected; the first fluid out was pretty dirty. I have done this on a number of gearbox service's I have done since seems to work on all makes.

Hi all got my misses to drive clunking was comeing from back off car had a read up and looked at previous history on my car see that the plastic gears in the transfer case where replaced and from that point it started clunking just after I bought it so read a few articles saying oil should be changed when doing this 2 weeks ago had the transfer case oil changed cost me 90 pounds oil 60 pounds quite dear only 1 litre is needed Labour 30 could have done myself but weather to cold jerking has gone. Yeepee transfer case oil needs to be changed every 50 ‘000 miles overlooked many times as inside case has clutches this was causing the jerk when slowing down no need To put on computer afterwards to reset just foot on accelerator for a minute engine off start up and drive forwards resets it all done now I can get my quad exhausts fitted and front parking sensor problem done also anyone fitted tv screens in back
