Ordering a new BMW? You might have a longer wait.

Post by X5Sport » Wed Mar 02, 2022 8:31 pm

BMW is pausing production at most of its EU plants as well as Mini production in Oxford.

A number of key parts suppliers are in Western Ukraine meaning severe disruption to supplies.

It wouldn’t surprise me if that also begins to impact plants further afield in the US, Mexico and SA.

Production of cars from kits in Kaliningrad has been stopped and Russian built cars will not be imported.

Looks like an even longer wait to order a new 3-series!

Could be a bit worse though! 4,000 VAG cars (VW, Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini) cars destined for the US are now sitting 2.5 miles down in the Atlantic near the Azores after a car carrier caught fire and sank! <cynic mode>I bet it was an electric car what did it</cynic mode off> :P

I had read about the ship fire and subsequent sinking, a serious insurance claim coming there, I've read 150 million, € or £ i don't recall.

As to new car manufacturing, i'm not in the market so not personally troubled. I wonder if used car prices will go even higher? Not that I've enquired about that either 🤔

I think it was £155M or similar. Ouch in any case. Bit of a pain if the auto-reordered replacement can’t be built though.

It’s all very sad really. Not that I’ll be able to put fuel in anything at this rate either… :o :(

Fuel prices are something of an obstacle for sure. I put about three quarters of a tank of Esso Supreme in on Friday, (every third fill for me) that was £106 😮

BMW are ramping up alternative suppliers but yes that could mean months of holdups.

Seems to the wiring harnesses that are the problem area this time. German company with Ukraine based production sites. VW now also have to pause production of EVs.
