X3 2019 DPF replacement

Post by Gav » Sun Sep 26, 2021 7:50 pm

Evening all

I’m wondering if anyone might be able to help.

The DPF on my X3 had to be replaced last week and since it‘s come back, the front wheel alignment is suddenly out of kilter. Basically the steering wheel is pointing at around 1 o’clock to drive in a straight line!

Would any of the steering mechanism have to be removed in order to replace the DPF??

I have no clue and not mechanically minded at all.

The reason I’m asking is i’m about to go into the dealership guns blazing after a shocking customer service experience already (which is a whole other story), the fault definitely wasn’t there before but it’s one of those where you doubt yourself. So I’d be interested to know if the steering mechanism does get taken apart in any way to do this job?

Incidentally the rear brake pads were done at the same time but it also makes me wonder whether the front ones were done instead!

Any help greatly appreciated

I’ve had a look at the technical instructions and there is no requirement to touch the steering or front axle assembly. Similarly no reason to go near the rear end (that could put the front out be causing crabbing. The front underbody reinforcement plate has to come off but that doesn’t affect the steering geometry. No need to remove the steering wheel either.. I would be asking whoever did it what they did and to put the alignment back.

Front and rear pads also don’t require any work on the steering either. All I can think of is was it driven up a kerb or into a pothole when they had it?

And :hi:

It does make access for removal a LOT easier if the knuckle joint to the rack is disconnected. I presume they have simply not lined it back up correctly, which is a pretty basic mistake, seeing as it's "keyed"

Just curious as to why you needed a new DPF on such a new car ?

I'm also curious to know the answer to this.
