Caught a rock that had fallen out of a hedge

Pulled in tight to edge of country road on a bend as a car was coming , grass was leaning into road with the rain so failed to see 2 large rocks had fallen out of the hedge probably when the hedge was cut . Couldn't have pulled out to miss them anyway with the oncoming car , I knew by the thump there would be damage , front tyre sidewall ripped and the rear followed it and has had the protector band mashed but looks like it hasn't went into the cord on inspection.
Not a great day and was much more worried about my 21 inch alloys as I would never be able to find a single one again as these are very rare over here . Ironically I had just put a full sized spare in the boot 5 mins before to take home so this was fitted at the roadside :headbang: and I only put the 21's on about a month ago

I had just polished the car and given it a good spruce up yesterday too :driving:

I’m amazed there’s that amount of tyre damage and the wheel survived. Unlucky on the one hand and very lucky on the other.

I think it was very fortunate the 2 spokes are just above the damage so making that area very strong otherwise id say it would have been broken in any other area , I can't see any damage a refurb won't fix and the inside of the rim hasn't been touched , I suppose until the tyre is off you can never be sure :D
2nd pic is the rear wheel and just the rim protector has been separated from the tyre .
Need to be more careful and remind myself just how wide an x5 is on a country road

Ouch! Amazed that didn’t trash the alloy, thought the rock I clipped that split my near side front last month was close! Was for me anyway, now quietly looking for a set of 19” alloys for my x5 as the 21” and country lanes don’t really mix, especially with a caravan on the back. Fortunately had a space saver in the caravan (the car is a 7 seater),

Not much tyre height on the 21's to take a hit for sure but I love the look of mine , that's another new looking tyre for the bin :( There was also a raised concrete drain hiding in the undergrowth poking out as the earth around it has been eroded away and I just touched it as there was a rubber mark on it (may not have been me though hard to say) but it may have been what slashed the sidewall I'm thinking now . I might have just got away with going over the rock if that was all and as said with the thump I expected a severely flat spotted rim but the actual impact damage seems very minimal more a rub that has ripped the paint off and kerbed a bit :?
