Hi.

Getting the transfer box oil changed due to the usual start of transfer box vibrations so going cheapest option first.

What oil do people use and how much is needed to change it. Does it need a replacement top up / drain bolt?

I have read one forum that suggests BMW use a different oil in the transfer box if you ask them to change it die to vibrations. Is it true and if so what do they use?

Thank you :D

The OEM lubricant is BMW DTF1. The Tech Instr suggest not using anything else in order to avoid damage, and that you must replace the filler plug. The other ‘challenge’ is that the transmission support crossmember needs to be removed (and the gearbox supported). You can get round it but it isn’t easy.

Part number - to find equivalents from - is: 83 22 2 409 710

Can’t find a quantity but it’s sold in 1-litre bottles. A search on the part number offers Ravenol and Shell S-Tec as options.
