Slight miss / judder at 30mph

Eh up all,

Been a while since I last posted as the X5s been a dream of late although not covered many miles which might be part of my problem :!:

Have been taking it out regular away each Sunday, nice steady 30 mins run across A roads and dual carriageway, a steady 30 - 65 ish so not pushing at all. :driving:

Runs sweet as a nut from cold, no issues and warms up nicely, it may be me but .........I’m sure when I get to the end of my run I come of the dual carriageways and hit 30 -40 zones. I’m positive I can feel a slight miss/ judder at 30 ish mph, seems to disappear above that.

I’m thinking injectors fouling through lack of use ?
MAF sensor issue?
Fuel ?

Any other ideas or common faults known

I’m positive it’s only just started in the last two weeks or so, it could well be me but if I could either get it to replicate consistently or cure I would be happy.

Cars got 101k on the clock, no faults just needs an oil change which I’m planning in for April

Happy to explore any potential problems as want it sorted

All help greatly appreciated

Torque converter lock up?

Eh up,

Ianp- thanks for that, never thought of that and need to think a bit more.

Initial thoughts are it’s not likely given it only manifests itself , or appears to , at low speed, would have thought the TC symptoms would appear across the speed spectrum or at least be more “consistent “ . :scratchhead:

I’m not ruling owt out though ..... :

Defo torque converter. Mine did exactly that when I bought it and I thought the same - plugs, fuel etc. Get your trans fluid replaced pronto and stick in a tube of Dr Tranny.

Eh up

Cheers Themoog2, I will definitely think about it more.

I did a full Filter and tranny fluid change using ZF oil last year - never had issues before so that’s why I’m struggling to see the connection - don’t doubt your experiences though so not ruling it out .

Just trying to work it through in my thick head :headbang:

Would the TC only generate a problem at a rev range, if it does then why would it not do it at different speeds given the revs and gearbox selection ?ie at 1500rpm in third would it not do it at 1500rpm in fifth ? Make sense :?

Cheers again for all inputs

Definitely worth getting it plugged in and seeing if there are any fault codes.

could be the gearbox ( valves/solenoids etc) could potentially be the transfer box ( I had judder, when under part load) and a transfer box oil changed solved it. Gearbox oil level could be low. Could be a diff. Could be a binding caliper.

Fault codes and a good indie to interpret that data is always going to be a good first shout.

Eh up, thanks for that.

Already done transfer fluids and diffs last year so hopefully ruled them out too- but you never know.

Interesting point on the binding calliper as I suspect near side is binding as disc and wheel hub running a little warm

Never associated the two really but could be linked - will investigate that option

Cheers keep ideas coming

No worries.

Good cars, lots of little niggles.

could it be a gearbox software issue?

Mines going in Monday for front wheel bearings, new heater fan, a parking sensor and brake fluid. Also investigating some other shit.

i sometimes think i should just get rid ( its a good one to be fair, just stuff going wrong in line with age/miles) but i'm quite fond of it.

Ill follow your post and look forward to your updates. The little details shared between us make all the difference.....

Cheers - been through my car over the years since I’ve had it.

Great kit and priceless help from the members on here

Only way I can afford to run it by working on it myself.

Funnily enough did brakes discs pads and fluids as a first job, also replaced 6 parking sensors - front bumpers a hoot to get off!

Good you get it sorted

Will keep this thread updated hopefully will bottom this out - still need to convince myself there’s an issue rather than my imagination ( don’t think it is BTW)

Cheers

When i thought i had the tc problem with getting the same symptoms as your getting i put 2 tubes of this in the box.
Obviosley it didn't fix the problem but it did go away so confirming the lockup clutches had failed.
Worth a try i think.

Eh up Alan

Thanks for that, I’m still mulling it over - cannot get it into my head yet - nowt unusual in that

I’m planning on taking a pal with me just to see if it’s me , once I get a second view on if the problem actually is there and it’s not my imagination I will start with the above suggestion

Keep the ideas coming - cheers all

I also had a passat for a very short time and it had this problem.
Same as you at first i couldn't make my mind up as it was so so slight but it was there the vibration or rhythmic hum so i put 2 tubes in.
Well the vibration went and so did the car but the first car a e46 i had a remanufactured tc fitted and it is still going 8 years later but i no longer own that car.
When i first found out about the oil aeritives not knowing what the problem was some people in the usa said this stuff had lasted for 5/10k or more but i had the repair done.

I put 1 tube of Dr tranny in mine and its OK 6 yrs later.
I actually went to an auto box specialist yesterday to talk about a slight knocking I have from the bellhousing area.
They did all sorts of odd driving tests with the transmission and said it was in perfect condition.
They think it's a possibility my flex plate may be cracked but not 100%. The only way to tell is to remove it I suppose.

Eh up all

Well I’m convinced

Car runs fine when cold, after a steady 55mph with no issues enter a 30-40 zone and it’s starts.

Only shows when car is warmed up, no signs when cold.

It doesn’t do it all the time though, that’s what I’m confused about.

Seems to clear up on acceleration though, does any of this make sense and confirm it’s the TC . :?

No other symptoms at any other speeds, box seems fine and smooth through gears, only point to note is it seems more “aggressive “ on down shift under braking

Could it be or else before I treat with some Dr Tranny snake oil

Also daft question time, how much to put in and where . Assume in the fill plug on the auto box :D

As usual all comments welcome for a soon to be more skint Yorkshireman :x
