Oil for 3.5D MSport

Post by Pradaman » Thu Feb 18, 2021 5:21 pm

Going to change the oil in my 59 plate 3.5 D what do you guys recommend for oil? Am I right in saying it has to be LL-04 spec? Any recommendations appreciated. It’s at 82k miles.

Castrol FST Edge Professional 5w 30 that meets BMW LL04 fully synthetic is the oil used by most dealers (0w 30 is an option). I use it in all of mine. I get it from Carparts4less (Eurocarparts on line only version) as there’s often a discount. You’ll need 2 off 4L packs. I think capacity is around 6.5L

Oil is a very talked about matter and quite often much disagreement. I ignore the LL stuff because it’s for long life oil changes that means the manufacturers spend less on servicing under warranty. As I change oil at 7.5k why would I need a LL oil. I use Shell Helix Ultra 5w 40. There again none of the 3 BMWs are under 150k. By the way I’m just about to buy a 20ltr drum for £79 less than half the price of 4, 5 ltr containers.

Might be, but the spec/recipe is on the label on the back. There is more than one version/recipe. There’s a Audi/VW version and a Merc version and a BMW version.

If it says LL04 as said its approved these oils have I believe low Ash which is important in modern diesels to reduce ask in the DPF.
