Transfer box

Hi

I am getting a very slight judder and tyre scrap on full lock in both directions in both forward and reverse gear and slow parking garage speed, feels like car is skipping on tarmac, it’s only been present a couple of weeks. Tyres are all pretty much brand new Dunlop run flats star marked, correct pressure. Transfer box on diagnostics shows oil wear, so I have ordered BM oil to do it myself, however getting under the car to check, I can only see one sump plug, I thought there would be two, one to empty and one to fill?

It’s got ATC450 stamped on it, but before I do anything I want to make sure I can access fill point etc before dropping the oil.

Any help appreciated

Happy Christmas, hope everyone enjoys what they can of it

Ollie

Fill plug is about 10 o’clock from the drain plug. Same side at the top of a circular casting with a vertical section in it. Fill until fluid just starts coming out. Tighten to 60Nm. The good book says you need to remove the transmission support cross member and support the box on a proper support device.

What’s the betting that the fill plug is behind the cross member :?

I don't know if all the transfer boxes are the same, but when I had all then transmission oils on my F25 they had to suck as much of the old oil as they could out of the transfer box because there's only a fill plug - no drain. .......And IIRC it takes less than a litre.

Thanks for the reply’s

Have investigated this further, and it seems your correct X5sport, the ATC450 does have both fill and drain plugs, and the plug I seem to be able to see clearly is the drain plug, the fill plug is not visible and as such believe it is behind the crossmember, going to have a proper route around next week. Looks like this might be a PITA!

Thanks again

Looking at an ebay pic the filler is directly above the atc450 lettering so shouldn't be hard to spot :D

Finally got this done today! Well it’s one of those jobs I wish I had never started! What an absolute PITA job, language was fruitful! Fill plug is completely blocked by crossmember, had to make my own tool, and then filling back up was a nightmare, need a really small tube, but it’s done! Don’t recommend it as a job to do unless you can get a ramp!
Oil before and after
Makes a difference to the drive and tyre skipping/judder has gone, not reset the adaptions yet however!
