I need someone's skills, I've been here before too!

I need to see how a wheel might look refurbished in an " off the wall" colour. I quite fancy the wheels below finished in BMW logo blue.

The more I've looked the more i like it. A bit whacky but i like to be bold and individual. My usual refurb company has advised a £30 surcharge over their normal cost of £300 + VAT. Thats for an acid bath strip, powder coat base with paint and lacquer over. I think i'll have satin or maybe even matt lacquer

If you do go for that blue or any other colour rather than silver or silver'ish make sure you tell your insurance company, may cost you £50 quid, I read a thread on a forum where the members daughter got rear ended in her 4yr old Audi and her insurance company wouldn't pay out due to she had the wheels re coloured from original silver to jet black...due to it being an undeclared modification.

Suppose i had these grey and diamond cut wheels refinished in silver, that would be a 50% colour change.

Many insurers will be fine, but a special colour is a modification - no matter how minor - so you need to tell them. It adds to their potential liability for repair costs. They are looking for any reason not to pay out, and a mod is a mod.

I'm prepared to state the NFU, my insurers for many years wont have a problem with such things, though i will enquire.

Previous questions as to winter tyres, non runflat tyres etc have been met with mild amusement like i was silly to even ask. NFU are not one of the many bucket shop insurers looking for any angle to shaft the customer, i have in the past made numerous changes in a years cover thats never been a problem and never carried a "change" fee.

As i predicted, the NFU have no problem whatsoever what colour my cars wheels are.

The representative at my regional office was slightly bewildered at my question, but said she would check with underwriters just to be 100% sure. She duly called back and confirmed what i was confident they would say.

When lockdown has eased i will pursue the intended refurb as soon as i can source some suitable tyres

NFU are amongst the more ‘progressive’ insurers we have worked with too. When dealing with them I have found them only to be worried about a ‘material change’ such as not using OEM wheels. A colour should not be a material change but previous insurers (I no longer use) have proved far less supportive with using official winter tyres causing an argument about being a mod or not (I won). NFU even checked in with us during lockdown to make sure we were OK. Great service in my book

I wholeheartedly recommend the NFU. Not always the cheapest but always competitive and i have haggled more than once. They have always struck me as real world people and as i have said, never charge for mid policy changes regardless of how many i inflict on them.

If the lass was rear ended, its surely a non fault matter, if the other party wasn't insured it could be trickier but regardless, in a non fault claim what colour the wheels would have to do with that is beyond me, and the very sensible NFU.
