Hoping not to tempt fate here but I have lost my spare key and now only have one ignition key for the car. I do have key insurance with the AA which hopefully i wont need but I'd be more comfortable having a spare.
What are my options in terms of sourcing a new one - presumably direct from BMW at horrendous cost?
What am I looking at here and what info will they need from me - will I need to take along log book as proof of ownership etc as I would image (or at least hope) they don't just hand out keys to anyone!

Proof of identity, V5, VIN, and something over £100 for the privilege of bothering them. You can code it to the car yourself or ask them to do it (it takes about 5 mins). Keys usually come from Münich.
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Same here.. Ive only had one key for years so I may take the plunge and get a spare.
Are BMW dealers open? I ordered something 2 months ago just before house arrest and it hasn't showed up yet.

Some are. My local dealer re-opens from Monday for servicing and parts only.

With new car sales almost non existent do you think they will be more attentive to their other customers
New key for mine was £110 they used the Key I was using in a reader to order then just needed the V5 as proof when picking it up, pairing is simple.

Interesting notes about cost. I had to get a new one for my E70 about 4 years ago. Cost £163, delivered in 24 hours after ordering in person, fully coded. Can't remember if I had to provide separate ID as I had the original key and the car to give all the details needed.
