Welcome. Having a Euro-spec vehicle presumably means you have heating as well as cooling, but does that not cause issues as it can be kinda warm there on a lot more days than we get up here in the Northern Latitudes?

I've got the OEM heating with key fob in my X5. Am I correct in thinking it was just another optional extra that could be speced from new?
BTW welcome to the forum

Yes it was an option - about £1k's worth in 2005. It's still about that now on the newer ones.

A £715 option according to the UK price list of Sep 2006!
Some other "fascinating" facts while we are at it:
- Rear aircon: £205 (worthwhile and decent value me thinks)
- Heated front seats: £320
- Heated rear seats: £320
- Base list price of the 3.0d Sport OTR: £39,110

Rear air-con is rubbish and I would happily not have it! It is because of this that my rear fans are NEVER ever used... it is honestly so noisey and the dealers say it is normal!

The one real use for the rear air con in my case is as a drinks cooler. Open the cup holder, put in a couple of bottles, turn the ac down all the way and hey presto. And no my fans aren't noisy at all. I don't run them particularly hard though.
I misread the price as £915 - really should wear glasses when reading small print
