Gearbox lurch

I don't use the car every day so it's never bothered me that much, but yesterday I drove it from cold for about 20 miles, ( different conditions ), and the gearbox behaved itself, then, after 20 miles it started lurching when coming to a stop, not all the time though.
I'v had the gearbox level checked, ( bmw indie garage ), and they also said the oil looked fairly new and ok in their opinion.
Anything else I should be looking at.

Mileage is 114K and I don't know about filter or oil changes, no evidence in paperwork.
The indie did say that the gearbox has been changed at some point, it's not the original box.

You need to take it to someone with the proper ability to do a diagnosis test. Your nearest ZF specialist or I think Lucas can do it. I think I remember x5Sport mention them. Might save throwing parts at it.

With Henry here a ZF specialist is the way to go.
If the box has been changed it would follow that the trans fluid would be changed but raises a question, changed with what? Incorrect fluid can cause damage plus depending on who did the box change it's possible the filter wasn't changed either.
A garage need a full BMW diagnostic suite or Autologic at a minimum to be able to read Gearbox codes.
Good Luck

I'll look one up.
I'm in the Gloucester area, anyone know of a decent specialist, I'm quite willing to travel as well to find a good one.

Could also be wrong filter fitted as in not a genuine BMW one....aftermarket filters always cause havoc.

Hi also had this ongoing problem on my X5, nearly covered 94K, had the vehicle last +6-years so don't think my auto-box has been touched. The vehicle has started having the so common lurch problem when the vehicle slows down and selects the lowest gear as well as the “trans fail safe” message popping up from time to time on the dashboard display unit.
Does anyone know if there's an approved ZF specialist list out there?, as there’s many a “gearbox and axle centre specialist” out there and some of them are just happy to empty your pockets of your hard earned cash and leave you with the same or sometimes worse issues down the line, maybe sounds a bit harsh but I’d prefer not to be court out, when spending my £££’s .
So can anyone recommend a gearbox and or BMW specialist near to me, Cwmbran, South Wales?

Scroll down and there are two ZF dealers in wales. Problem is an oil change once you have problems is unlikely to fix it. If your lucky it will just be a low level. If you take it to anyone other than a ZF dealer then buy the oil and filter from BMW’ or ZF. Unless you know the shop well they’ll probably stick in some 10p filter and as.marti says your asking for trouble. I have 156k on mine and it’s had three oil and filter changes, oil and filters from BMW.

that's the problem finding a decent outfit who do an excellent job for a fair price. Although, hopefully someone can correct me if I'm wrong, I think that the address for the TRW Limited, Cirencester Plant is a Technical Centre Only/ UK base and not one where you can get your vehicle serviced?? As the two listed in Wales are manufacturing properties/ distribution outlets only???

Hi, bit late with this reply, I have 05 3.0d, I had what I call 1st gear thump which is like someone smashing in to the back of the car when coming to a stop, had gearbox specialist have a look and oil had previously been changed so took a gamble and had all solenoid valves changed, think it is 7, also new oil and filter and mechatronics seals, cost was around £800 but perfect ever since, no more 1st gear thump
