How many on an e53 3.0d ? - I have changed the unit on the front of the engine but some say there may be two more via transmission cooler and egr - if they are there I certainly cannot find them !

On my 2002 3.0d there is only one on the engine they don't have the EGR thermostat like all the rest.
The later ones have it but not sure what year they came in.
Sorry not sure about the transmission one

For what it is worth all l my BMW experience is with the 4.4/4.6 engines they have one engine thermostat in the water pump and a water temperature sensor in the lower Rad water pipe, the factory fit transmission cooler is just a heat exchange unit as far as I know. My 4.6 had an after market transmission oil cooler fitted when I got it which does have a thermostat. I have also retro fitted an electric Cooling fan in place of the engine driven fan so now have a temperature sensor in the top hose So my score is 2 thermostat 2 temperature sensors.

Both my sons drive diesels (not BMW) both have EGR thermostats as does my brother in-laws 535d touring all these are 2010 and newer cars though.
