Which one?

Hi guys I’ve been away for a few years after my last X5 gearbox decided to give up.
I’ve owned 3 X5’s over the last 10yrs all were E53 and 2 of them ended up with gearbox issues.

Now my question -
Missing the X5 so thinking of buying a E70.
1) Do they suffer gearbox issues like the E53?
2) I want a diesel, which one do I buy?
3) What year did the 8 speed box start?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to your response

1. No
2. The ‘hooligan’ version is the M50D(triple turbo!) the slightly restrained but still very good is the 40d (dissimilar twin-turbo and having tried both my personal preference).
3. With the E70 LCI in 2010.

You do need to be careful with tyres as fitting the wrong ones can break the diffs or transfer boxes.

X5Sport thanks for your reply.
I’ve seen a few 40d, what’s the mpg like? I do 12-14k miles a year so have to think about fuel economy a little  that’s partly why I’m interested in the 8 speed for better economy

Around town 26-28.

Motorways up to 35 depending upon the level of ‘progress’ being made.

Long term average on mine is around 30-31mpg but that’s it, and not too bad considering the weight of the thing.

Mine hasn’t been modded/mapped.

Not sure if relevant as a different model although presumably a similar engine but over the first nine thousand four hundred odd miles in ten months, my f15 40d has averaged 33 miles per gallon, but that includes around two thousand miles of towing a two ton caravan, on a run mid to high 30’s with 24 to 27 towing, short trips around town are below thirty, but I do very little if that.
The calculated average cost of fuel per mile is 17.4p according to Fuelio.

Budget for less than 30 mpg as it simply won't happen on an e70 (imo) no doubt the f15 is much better but I don't see many on here claiming 30 + from an e70 if we are talking combined over a tank not what we got going down hill with a following wind lol
