E53 m54b30 strange noise

Post by Moonhead88 » Sat Sep 21, 2019 4:49 pm

Hi all

My 2002 3.0i has developed a strange noise. Has anyone come across this before or can suggest what it may be.

Timing chain maybe.
Somebody with a petrol might have a better idea soon.

Thanks for the reply.

Timing may be a good shout I was thinking maybe it's something to do with the vanos after watching loads of youtube videos.

What mileage has it done?? Is it a 3litre or V8 ?
Think about a timing chain tensioner, there is a big difference between old and new Length wise)
If a V8 costs about £70 for a new tensioner, One hint : do not play with new tensioner, it is already spring loaded and if you play with it and release the loading it is a devil of a job to fit.( no prizes as to how I know !!!)
There is a helpful post on here or try youtube or Pelican Parts ( an American site ,but very useful.

Had a similar noise on a 3.0l years ago which had been sold for a song believing it was chain related. Turns out it was a detached baffle plate in the catalytic converters, sounded so engine related, a long metal bar on cat, other end in ear confirmed. Just a thought, worth eliminating
