Power steering leak: pipe/hose replacement queries

Hi guys,

I have a small leak on my Power steering. It was identified that both pipes connected to the PAS reservoir needs replacement . This will cost about £430

It seems there are pipes 1 and 9 from here http://www.bmw-etk.info/parts-catalog/p ... 32/32_1287. It seems pipe 1 is over £200 on its own!.

Just wondering where I can get the pipes from cheaper and also how easy it is to fit them myself?

Thanks

When I had this problem on my Saab 9-5 I removed the leaking pipe and took it to my local branch of Pirtek who made up a flexible one to match. It cost £25 and worked perfectly.

I’ve got a 4.6 so no doubt your pipes are different but mine were a lot cheaper for the 2 attached to the reservoir, I also replaced the reservoir whilst I was at it as it has a non replaceable filter in it and both suction and return lines which were £124 from Cotswold BMW - message them through the forum - they do a bit of a discount which my local BMW stealer won’t match (“don’t know how they do it blah blah”)

I also replaced one pipe that was a combination of metal and rubber lengths in a bendy pre-formed shape and that was an eye watering £175 just for the pipe.

The Pirteks local to me are not open on weekends. Going down a repair route (if possible) will be good only if I can actually remove the items off the car. I read something somewhere about possible issues disconnecting the smaller hose from the radiator intercooler pipe ....

I just gave Cotswold a call for quote on the part and there was a £30 savings. Maybe I should tell the indy to buy the parts from them instead!

I had a look at the pipes over the weekend. The shorter one is absolutely fine with no spot of oil so not sure why the indy said that also needed replacing.

So I cleaned the 2nd pipe and the surrounds. Plan is to run for a few weeks to check exactly where the leak is coming from.
