auto headlight switch - seems to have a mind of its own!

Hi all,
Bit embarrassed to be posting this but can someone tell me how the auto-headlight switch works? I generally leave it in the 'auto' setting (turned to the left with the green light on). Unlike my 3 series, I can see the switch is motorised but it seems I'm getting in the car in broad daylight and it's turned itself to the dipped beam setting with headlights on before I even start the engine!
Can someone explain how it (is supposed to) works?
Andrew

Mine kept doing that....but only when the wife used it!...as when she got in the car she was knocking the switch with her leg/knee without knowing it....maybe thats whats happening??

What makes you think that the light switch is motorised? Just curious because I’ve not seen that on any BMW that I have had or currently own. Seems an odd thing to motorise, but then again it is a BMW after all, and they do like ‘driver aids’. The one in my X6 (so should be the same as the E70 is purely manual.

I posted something similar a while ago. I thought I was going mad but I did catch myself nudging the switch with my knee and turning the lights on.

Schoolboy error on my part that may be relevant?
In the menu i had selected DRLs on without realising that negates the auto on/off function. Check what settings are ticked in the menu choices. If DRLs are selected they illuminate immediately.
