GAP insurance offered by dealer - rip off

Post by acideraser » Wed Apr 06, 2011 10:47 am

Dealer offered me a deal on GAP RTI (return to invoice) and tyre insurance on collection. Since I've shopped around and knew internet prices already, wasn't very keen on taking it, but than again he mentioned that level of protection and reliability of the package offered by BMW is way better than what you get on the internet blah-blah-blah... So I took terms and condition to read and at some stage realised the terms were almost identical to the one I wanted to buy from the car2cover website. Compared the terms and indeed - same underwriter, terms identical all the same except ... price.
Dealer's initial price was about £1200 RTI for 3 years then he offered a "deal" - tyre insurance + RTI for £1150, same 3 years period.

Same insurance from car2cover was... £300 for same period and on the same terms!. Tyre insurance £260, or £540 all together... Plus you can choose between RTI or RTV gap insurance that's easy 600 quid difference, so don't rush in to buying this services from the dealer - you can find them waaay cheaper on the internet, even exactly same policy.

Moreover, the BMW policy was underwritten by IGI but IGI is AmTrust since summer 2010, so they just keep using old brochure ...

hope this can help somebody :D

I had a look around when I was buying the X6 and at that time I could not find a policy that had a maximum payout of the level required. I can't remember who I looked at, but the ones I saw were all capped at a maximum figure. This figure would have been fine if we traded the E53, but as HRH decided she wanted it that meant I needed more protection for my own piece of mind. I only paid about £400 for the BMW policy though, and £299 for the tyre one. How come your offer was so high? I'm pretty sure my provider is Zurich too.

maybe that's because the dealership is in London so they kind of expect people to pay 1200+ for the piece if mind when buying/collecting a 60+k car?

They offered to throw both in for me if I took finance instead of just buying it.
