Checklist

I apologise if this is a naive question but, what is the best way to check whether or not the suspension bushes are in good condition or need replacing? Is it a case of listening for knocking when test driving or can you visually see them looking shabby?
I'm going to look at a car later in the day that has done 69k but my mechanical knowledge is limited so any further advice for checking is more than welcome. I'm familiar with the buyers guide which gives great advice and will definitely be pedantic when I check the electrical components.
