Towbar fitting

Post by Sanqhar » Tue Dec 04, 2018 12:32 pm

Does fitting an aftermarket towbar to either first or second generation X1s require any modifications to the cooling system?
Does a new car with the towbar option fitted at the factory have an uprated cooling system?
I have asked on the BMW UK Live Chat and they just referred me to my local dealer.

Factory fit towbars do have the upgrade to oil cooling and a revised grill set up on the bumper to allow for more air cooling of the engine.
If you are only planning to tow lightweight trailers such as garden waste little ones then you should be fine with an after market.
However if you plan to tow heavyweight stuff then take advice from a specialist about adding extra cooling to the gearbox if possible.

X5 had the same uprated fan when factory towpack fitted but not really needed in the uk more for much warmer climates as the car has to be suitable for all markets.
